Should Eugene Monroe Stay Or Go?

According to a report from Jeff Zerbiec of the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens are actively seeking to trade Eugene Monroe. The Ravens reasons for parting with Monroe are fairly clear. That does not make the rationale correct.

The Ravens traded for Monroe in the 2013 season. Since acquired, he has played about half of the time. repetitive injuries are one thing that grew tiresome with Monroe. It’s easy to assume that the Ravens view him as an unstable option to lean on for their offensive line.

Monroe also has become an advocate for medical marijuana in the National Football League. While he has a strong point and has done nothing wrong; how do the Ravens feel about this? The team has become more PR conscious than ever thanks to the Ray Rice fiasco.

Adding on to all of that, the Ravens took an offensive tackle with the sixth pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. The Ravens seem impressed with Ronnie Stanley. Who says he is the left tackle for the future? The Ravens want that future to start right now.

That is the argument for saying goodbye to Monroe. It’s compelling, but I’m far from sold. Monroe is not a bad player.

If Stanley is the real deal, they won’t want to wait. They’ll put him at left tackle for good. But if Stanley is the real deal you don’t want to risk him becoming spoiled goods. If he struggles at left tackle that can happen.

Monroe would provide a bridge for Stanley. Stanley could start either at left guard or right tackle. Monroe would man Flacco’s blind side.

The Ravens can never have enough depth on the offensive line. If they  kept Monroe, the worst case scenario is that they have a starting quality back up.

The Ravens added Vlad Ducasse to the roster. In addition to Stanley, the Ravens drafted Alex Lewis. If they kept Monroe they would have a surplus of talent.

The idea the Ravens have is that they can find a cheaper player to add depth. Their investment in Monroe did not go the way they had hoped, and they want to move on. But the problem with Monroe has been injuries not talent. He’s now feeling 100% for the first time in a while. He has good talent. After last season, can you ever have enough talent?
