Injuries are too much to avoid

The impact of the injuries the Ravens have suffered this season is really starting to take it’s toll. That’s what happens when you’ve got 15 players on injured reserve this early in the season. It’s not the Ravens fault, but they are still the one’s who have to suffer because of it. The loss of Brandon Williams and Marshal Yanda were especially noticeable in today’s loss.

The Ravens could not get any push in the trenches on either side of the ball. Blake Bortles had all day in the pocket and for all the criticism that he’s gotten, he looked like Tom Brady against a defense many considered to be a top unit in the league. It didn’t help that Brent Urban left the game with a foot sprain either. The Ravens have one of the deepest defensive lines in the league but even they couldn’t keep up with all the different rotations.

And like I’ve talked about, Yanda is irreplaceable on the offensive line. Tony Bergstrom was a healthy scratch and the Ravens experimented with Matt Skura and Jermaine Eluemunor at guard. Needless to say, it didn’t work out too well. The Jaguars front-seven had their way and handled the Ravens on all facets of the offense. You have to wonder if Bergstrom would have made a difference there. At the very least, he provides experience while Skura and Eluemunor were seeing their first ever regular season action.

The good news is that Brandon Williams should be good to go next week. The Ravens will need him coming up against Le’Veon Bell and the explosive Steelers offense. As for the offensive line, it’s a position that will continue to haunt the Ravens. I can’t have much confidence right now in the backups and a trade for a veteran seems more and more like a possibility.
