Baltimore Ravens getting anything for Alex Lewis was a steal

Alex Lewis was traded to the New York Jets. The Baltimore Ravens turned a basic roster cut into an extra pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. That’s a win:

The Baltimore Ravens were going to be done with Alex Lewis one way or the other. The Ravens could have just released Lewis. Instead they traded him to the New York Jets. While reports indicate that all the Ravens got was a conditional seventh round pick, that’s getting something out of nothing.

Lewis was recovering from a shoulder injury adding to the fact that injuries were the story of his career. When Lewis was finally cleared to get to practice, he was shipped off. The timing is not surprising. The Ravens had been planning this move.

The Ravens are a team with a long history of having undrafted free agents make the team and even make an impact. An extra seventh round pick could net the Ravens a special teams ace or a project player with some promise. A seventh round pick could help the Ravens make a trade on the third day of the draft. Any ammunition to draft a player you really like is better than scrambling to sign him once undrafted free agency begins.

A conditional seventh round pick is a pretty good get for Lewis. Lewis is a player who doesn’t have the brightest career progression going on. The beginning of his career was surprisingly good. He got hurt and missed the back half of his rookie season. He got hurt and missed the 2017 season. Last season his play was just adequate and he missed a couple games due to injury.

There is a clear pattern with Lewis. Some football players don’t have any luck and he is one of them. The Jets made a move for depth. What the Jets found was a player with starting experience to give them a little depth on the offensive line. If Lewis didn’t make the team and the Ravens didn’t get their seventh round pick, it wouldn’t be a shocker.

The left guard position has the most clouded prognosis for the Ravens. Jermaine Eluemunor is the starter until further notice. This is an alarming idea, considering the fact that Eluemunor has been mostly awful since being drafted in 2017. Ben Powers and James Hurst are the two other players vying for the starting job in between Ronnie Stanley and Matt Skura.

With all of the doubt at the position Eric DeCosta did the coaching staff a favor. He took a player out of the mix who the Ravens probably couldn’t have counted on to stay in the starting line up (If he even cracked it). To get anything at all for Lewis was a job well done by DeCosta and company. The Ravens won the trade and the Jets got a player they shouldn’t get excited about.
