The Baltimore Ravens have had a very strong 2026 NFL Draft through the first three rounds. They selected Vega Ioane in the first round, followed by selecting Zion Young at No. 45, and rounded out Day 2 with Ja’Kobi Lane.
While Baltimore’s draft has been pretty straightforward thus far, the same can’t be said for their AFC North rival, the Pittsburgh Steelers. Credit where credit is due, they’ve made some good picks, but it’s been an eventful couple of days, headlined by the Makai Lemon fiasco. On Friday night, the Steelers made a polarizing pick that could backfire.
At No. 76 overall, Pittsburgh selected Drew Allar, a quarterback from Penn State. Some believe it’s a desperation pick, as their quarterback room is a massive question mark, especially looking ahead. As a result, the decision has a lot of Ravens fans pointing and laughing.
Baltimore Ravens fans given front row seats to potential Steelers’ implosion
Not every team can be blessed with a great quarterback situation. In fact, just two out of the four teams in the AFC North have a stable play at that crucial spot. While the Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals have Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow, the Cleveland Browns and Steelers have Shadeur Sanders and…Drew Allar?
The Allar pick could be a sign that the Will Howard experiment is already over. If that’s true, you can throw another failed quarterback selection up on the board for Pittsburgh.
Ever since Ben Roethlisberger retired, the Steelers have struggled to find their quarterback of the future. Kenny Pickett was another draft whiff back in 2020, and the short stints of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields could be considered strikeouts, too. Even Mason Rudolph was the go-to guy for a bit, and I guess could be in line for round two if the team doesn’t make another move.
Pretty much everyone expects Pittsburgh to re-sign Aaron Rodgers. He helped bring the team to the playoffs last year, and the current state of their QB room looks extremely unprepared for 2026. However, even if Rodgers ends up being the starter, it’s a red flag for the future. He’s 42 years old!
Allar could be the man for the job moving forward. He’s widely expected to be a boom-or-bust prospect, though. It’s a high-risk selection, especially in the third round.
The biggest flaw of Allar’s game is his ability to process what’s in front of him. He can struggle to diagnose coverages, and his decision-making under pressure deteriorates. His play lacks confidence under pressure, as his throws often go off target and he makes questionable reads. His ball placement as a whole can also be erratic.
Of course, Allar could develop into a starting-caliber talent, especially if he gets the chance to learn under Rodgers. However, he’s far behind the curve right now. And Ravens fans are probably begging for the Steelers to send him out there in Week 1.
