The Baltimore Ravens just signed star wide receiver Zay Flowers to a four-year, $140 million contract extension that includes $108 million of guaranteed money. Look, I love Zay and have been impressed with his growth so far, but frankly, I didn't fully expect him to earn a deal of this magnitude.

Currently, Flowers feels like a reliable No. 1 wide receiver, but not an elite top-tier one. This contract puts Flowers in a different class of players. Specifically, only three WRs (Drake London, Ja'Marr Chase, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba) have more lucrative contracts than Zay. For as good as Flowers is, a top-five receiver is a high bar.
Interestingly, Flowers' deal is identical in total value and length to Justin Jefferson's deal. The Minnesota Vikings star has a case to be the league's best WR. At bare minimum, he's a top-five receiver, even after a down 2025. Flowers may have produced at a higher level than Jefferson last season. But nobody can fault Jefferson for his quarterback situation, and nobody would argue that Flowers is better than Jefferson or a top-five receiver right now.
Of course, Jefferson signed that deal back in 2024, and the market has drastically shifted. Still, to justify this huge contract, Flowers needs to reach another level.

Flowers is coming off a stellar 1,211-yard season, and at 25, he may reach another level. Despite how steady Flowers has been on a down-to-down basis, he's not a perfect receiver.
Most notably, Flowers isn't a red zone threat, scoring just five touchdowns last season. Furthermore, he was targeted just 11 times in the red zone, which led to seven receptions.
Can Zay be the best WR on a winning team? Absolutely. But to be the top-tier elite receiver that his contract sets him up to be, Flowers needs to level up. With the Ravens' lack of big-name receiver additions, you could argue this was always the case. However, his contract sets the undeniable expectation: Zay needs to reach another level.
Removing last season, Jefferson has been as productive as any receiver in the league. In 2024, he racked up 1,533 yards, and in 2022 he recorded 1,809 yards. Jefferson was also on pace for 1,825 in 2023, though he missed seven games due to injury.
Even from a pure receiving production standpoint, Flowers needs to improve. Plus, Jefferson is more of a touchdown and red-zone threat than Flowers, which, as established, is an area of growth for Zay. Unfortunately, due to his smaller frame, Flowers might have trouble becoming the touchdown machine his contract indicates he should be.
Jefferson also doesn't make the same mistakes as Flowers. Last season, Flowers had three fumbles: Jefferson has four fumbles for his six-year career.
The point is that Flowers will be judged at an elite standard with his new contract, and since he's paid the same as Jefferson, these comparisons will be natural.
With ample improvement, Zay could reach this level, but it will be far from easy, and the bar is sky-high. You have to be a complete receiver in every regard to justify this deal, and Flowers has some work to do.
I don't want to disregard the possibility of Zay improving at 25, with a system that leans into the passing game more and doesn't have much competition. The wide receiver market skyrocketing this offseason also forced the Ravens' hand. Nevertheless, I would've felt more comfortable with a slightly smaller contract.
