Here’s why Ravens fans should actually pay attention to the Diego Pavia signing

The Baltimore Ravens recently signed undrafted quarterback Diego Pavia, and the polarizing QB actually has a chance to be a part of the team’s future.

Diego Pavia, one of the most polarizing players in the football world, is coming off an interesting draft experience. After going undrafted, and not immediately signing with a team, fans wondered if the 2025 Heisman Finalist would be given an opportunity by any team. The Baltimore Ravens ended up extending him a rookie minicamp invite, but only on a tryout basis.

However, before even holding the rookie minicamp, the Ravens have signed Pavia to a three-year deal. It’s unclear why Baltimore quickly decided to change up their approach with Pavia, but the likely reason is that the quarterback was receiving interest from other teams.

Whatever the case, Ravens fans may be inclined to overlook the decision to sign Pavia, doubting that he’ll make it through the offseason. However, Baltimore signing him means he has a serious chance to be a part of the team’s future.

Diego Pavia will compete for Ravens’ roster spot after signing three-year contract

Let’s make one thing clear: Lamar Jackson is Baltimore’s quarterback. None of this is to imply that Pavia, or anyone, will be knocking on Jackson’s door. Instead, this is about Pavia’s very real opportunity to compete for the Ravens’ QB3 role.

On Tuesday, Baltimore also signed undrafted rookie quarterback Joe Fagnano to a three-year deal. The stakes for Pavia and Fagnano are the same: they will compete with each other to be Baltimore’s QB3. With Jackson starting and Tyler Huntley as the only backup, the Ravens are looking for a third quarterback to help get through training camp and the season.

That could be Pavia, but it could also be Fagnano. That will be determined by how they look alongside each other throughout the offseason. Their competition will start in rookie minicamp, and carry on throughout the rest of the offseason program. It will likely culminate in training camp, where one of the rookie quarterbacks will eventually be cut, and the other will remain in town to be the emergency quarterback.

For the quarterback who wins that competition, their path with Baltimore will be determined by how good they look in training camp and the preseason. If they look really good, the Ravens may carry three quarterbacks on their regular-season roster. However, the more likely option is that the third quarterback is cut and re-signed to the practice squad.

Now, the question is if that will be Diego Pavia.
