The Baltimore Ravens have constructed a laundry list of potential head coaching candidates to replace John Harbaugh. After firing Harbaugh, their lead job has quickly become one of the most sought-after.
As of Monday evening, the Ravens have conducted five interviews. Those include Vance Joseph, Davis Webb, Klint Kubiak, Kevin Stefanski, Matt Nagy, Anthony Weaver, and Kliff Kingsbury. Plenty more await, and they are likely not finished requesting interviews.
One recent candidate that has emerged for the job is Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Nathan Scheelhaase. It’s a bit of a shocking development to some, looking as Scheelhaase has just two years of NFL coaching experience and has yet to take on an offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator role. However, the Rams have had an outstanding offense in those past two seasons, which makes him such an enticing candidate.
Ravens request an interview with Nathan Scheelhaase
While Scheelhaase is just 35 years old and has only two years of coaching in the NFL, he has plenty of football experience. After starting at quarterback for four seasons at Illinois, Scheelhaase turned to coaching in 2015.
He was Illinois' running backs coach in 2015 and an offensive assistant from 2016 to 2017. He then spent time at Iowa State from 2018 to 2023. He started as the running backs coach in 2018, transitioned to their wide receivers coach from 2019 to 2020, added running game coordinator to his workload from 2021 to 2022, and rounded out his tenure as a Cyclone in 2023, becoming their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
At the NFL level, Scheelhaase began as the Rams’ offensive assistant and passing game specialist in 2024. And of course, he was their pass game coordinator in 2025.
The point is, Scheelhaase knows pretty much everything there is to know about an offense. He’s coached three major position groups, commanded an entire offensive unit, and is now playing a significant role in Los Angeles’ success these past two years.
This year, Scheelhaase has helped the Rams to a league-best output in total yards per game, passing yards per game, and points per game. He also has quarterback Matthew Stafford in a position to win his first career MVP in his 17th NFL season.
Sure, the talent on the Rams’ roster has plenty to do with their success, but Scheelhaase’s quarterback and offensive expertise has gotten the best out of those players.
It would be a risky move to replace a Hall of Fame-caliber head coach with a largely unproven coach like Scheelhaase, but younger head coaches are starting to take the league by storm, and the 35-year-old could be next in line.
