If you buy into the theory that the Baltimore Ravens are going to spend a mid round pick on a speedy, field stretching wide receiver, then you won’t be surprised to learn that wide receivers coach Bobby Ingram was in attendance at Utah’s pro day to check out Dres Anderson. And Anderson didn’t disappoint the reported 14 NFL teams in attendance, running a 4.43 40 yard dash.
That would be a great time even if Anderson wasn’t only 90 percent recovered from a medial collateral ligament injury that required surgery seven months ago. And he demonstrated that he is more than just a one trick pony by catching all but one pass thrown his way. Anderson measured in at 6’1″ and 186 pounds and recorded a 10-1 broad jump, 6.87 three cone drill, 4.2 short shuttle, and 11.32 60 yard shuttle.
Dres Anderson was originally considered a second round prospect, but his injury may cause him to drop somewhere in the third or fourth round, even though he is fully expected to be ready for minicamp. Some even have him as low as the fifth or sixth round. While opinions are all over the map on Anderson, he is Utah’s all time leading receiver with 134 receptions for 2,077 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Despite his strong pro day showing, Anderson had issues in college getting off press coverage and has shown inconsistent hands through his career. He had a drop rate of 18.6 percent over the last two seasons, which is quite alarming. In spite of his faults, however, Dres Anderson has the speed and the upside to grow into a solid pro. He’s the kind of player that could work on fundamentals for a year or two while rotating in as a situational deep threat, which is something the Ravens lack at the moment.
